Our Exchange server spam filter accepts incoming email, and scans them using SpamAssassin™. Spam is identified using several different techniques such as scanning for mail header inconsistencies, looking for spam keywords, Bayes filtering and more. The results of the different spam filtering tests are added up to form a spam score, and if this score exceeds a certain limit the message is labeled as spam. Once this Exchange spam filter has identified the spam, it is up to you to decide whether you want to reject, accept or delete the spam.
There are many advantages to spam filtering at the mail server level. Spam mail can be deleted immediately, before it enters your system. This saves you storage, bandwidth, time, and ultimately money. Also, with this Exchange server spam filter, the sender can be notified if a legitimate message was identified as spam.
